The sounds of silence were drowned out by my car going vroom vroom vroom

So today was the day where I was supposed to hang around and enjoy the dearth of workmen in my house as well as the lack of construction noises they weren't making.

Except that I was on the road by 9:00 to get to a 10:00 board meeting downtown, followed by a 12:00 rehearsal, another hour to get home again, a trip to my son's cello lesson, the dropping off of my daughter at dancing class, the picking up my son at dancing class and taking him to choir, and ending with the final pick up at 9:15. Which is 12 hours in my car, and thank God my latest audiobook is entertaining.

And when I had a moment where I wasn't driving around? The phone rings and it's Angie's List, wanting me to review the contractors I've been using:

"Yes, we had our roof worked on. Powerwashing, brightening, and moss prevention. They were very good."

"Yes, we had a new driveway installed. They were very prompt, professional, and competitively priced. Yes I would recommend them."

"Yes, we had a deck installed. Well, I don't actually have anything to say about that because they just finished it yesterday and I haven't really been out on it because it's been RAINING, OK?"

Christ, it's like the wedding's over, things have quieted down, and now I have to write thank you letters to my contractors.

Also? I hate Wednesdays.

  2. Are audiobooks twelve hours long? Seriously?

You are a stay-in-the-car mom, actually...Just stay there and keep driving us around, lady. I know the feeling.

  3. At least your contractors won't be around next month. I'm already pondering what to get our construction crew for Christmas AND ALSO when they're done with the house six weeks after that.

  4. Heather: I'm a stay at home mom with a part-time job of chauffeur. At least that's what it feels like.

tress: Twelve hours is the short books. Many of mine are over 20 hours long, which will be useful when my son starts taking cello lessons in Montana. Right now I'm listening to Framley Parsonage, and it's 18 hours of wooly Victorian fun.

Jenontheedge: I yi yi! And a very Merry Construction to you!

  5. I think you need a luxury car to make Wednesdays more tolerable. Also, a Mercedes or Beemer would look so good on your new driveway.

  8. Gee! You had to put up with Angies list?
Hope you didn't dish out money to join them. Their ratings are so very unreliable in my opinion!
Anybody who throws them a few dollars can join and there is no way, man, to check the stuff people publish. Heck! as far as I know Jo the Plumber sister in law may be ratng him. Now, I do like Jo the Plumber, but that's another story...

Angies? I agree with the New York Time: it's an expensive, glorified, yellow page advertisin company.

Research them before joining. Google "angies list complaints" see what you find.

    Love your blog!

    Larry!
