To reward Suzanne for her perspicacity, I, the inimitable Poppy, a Partly-Digested Parboiled Squid in the TTLB ecosystem, am finally getting around to linking to her amazing blog.
I'm also going to do her meme. Which is about which music had your shaking your groove thing during your formative years, man. Also, which music gagged you with a spoon. This meme is the real deal-i-o, hep cats and cool chicks. Want to find out what kind of weirdo I was when I was 18? Read it and laugh.
First, here are the rules:
1. Go to popculturemadness.com and select the year (in the left sidebar) you turned 18.
2. Paste the list of the top 75 songs. (Except I stopped at 40. My readers don't have much of an attention span.)
3. Bold the ones you liked; strike the ones you disliked; and italicize the ones you knew but didn't exactly like or dislike. The ones you don’t know will stay plain text.
I don't know whether this is a spoiler, but it's clear that 1.) If you didn't dance to it, I wasn't interested; 2) I hated country; 3) I was completely uninterested in what was up-and-coming in the realm of rock (i.e., had never heard of Bruce Springsteen at this point) and with the exception of my dislike for Elton John's whininess, irritating falsetto voices, and sappy chick singers, had pretty well stabilized Truly Terrible Taste.

I would do this, but 1984 was a horrible year for music and all of mine would be crossed out. I actually know and like way more of the songs on your list than mine.
ReplyDeleteSee, I AM old before my time!
Er, not that YOU'RE old. Or anything. Heh.
And you were feeling old!
ReplyDeleteSee how I spread sweetness and light?
It's a gift.
I'm crying, CRYING I tell you, with laughter ovah heah.
ReplyDeleteFor having come of age in the 1970s you have my unending sympathy.

I know. If only I could have been 18 years old the year these were the number one hits:

April 11 - May 1: Kiss On My List - Hall & Oates
May 2 - May 15: Morning Train (Nine To Five) - Sheena Easton
May 16 - July 17: Bette Davis Eyes - Kim Carnes

I mean ... Christopher Cross and Olivia Newton-John in the same year? Some people have all the luck.
I turned 18 in '77 when disco was king. It's a little depressing.
ReplyDeleteOh. My. God.
ReplyDeleteI was having an incredibly annoying, aggravating day, and I FINALLY got half a minute to sit down and log on.
And, hm, what this? Most of the hits on my blog today were referred from the lovely Poppisima for some unknown reason. I come over to see what all the ruckus is about, and lo and behold, SHE MENTIONED ME BY NAME!! Squee!!
You have NO idea how much of my faltering faith in general humanity has been restored due to your selfless actions. I would dance with joy if I weren't too tired to haul my butt off the couch.
And why people didn't get that Britney Spears connection is completely beyond me, too. Hello, people?? Duh!
Thanks for the shout out and making my day. Probably my week...
I love our Mamarazzi readers but the way I figure it, people who are having a bad day and want to spit venom ought to keep their tongues. Ditto their typing fingers.
ReplyDeleteI stole this meme. Thank you for giving me the opportunity to fess up to being a senior citizen.
I stole the meme from Sarah.... but I have to say, how can you be neutral about Freebird? Freebird!!!!!!! (insert your own emotion to those exclamation points)
