If you ever go to dinner in Chautauqua, New York

don't order the mussels.

They're OK, and I'm not sick or anything, but they're NOT VERY GOOD.

  1. I wouldn't order mussels if the sea wasn't within a few miles. But, then again, I'd never order mussels.

  2. And if you order Italian for delivery, no matter where you are, don't order linguine with clams. Your white wine broth will leak out all over everything. And they will forget to bring the rosemary focaccia. Very sad...

  3. Silly. You were supposed to get ice cream at the ice cream shop. **sigh** I miss the lake.

  4. If I didn't cook 'em, I'm not having any damned bivalves.

  5. BB: I know. I think I was getting so excited about heading out east that I overlooked the fact that I hadn't actually arrived.

kathyr: At least when we made a mess, it was all over the restaurant. Yay us!

Robie: What's worse is we drove past Box Car Barney's twice. And I eat mussels instead. Duh!

  6. Why can't I place where Chatauqua is? Hudson River Valley? Are you driving to NH?

  7. This is the truly tragic part of living in the midwest. The NON ability to order shellfish with confidence. Sigh...

  8. joke: What they needed was the fennel/Pernod element.

SuburbanC: We're in very western New York--west and south of Buffalo, on a beautiful lake. The Chautauqua Institute is here--summer camp for intellectuals. But we're just stopping while we yes, drive to New Hampshire.

fannie mae: I agree. Only three things bother me about the midwest: the age of the seafood, the eternal flatness, and the Goddamned weather. (Right now it's fabulous but "right now" won't last.)

  11. Good to know!

A friend called earlier with a vacation update and they DID get sick. Nothing like food poisoning when you're staying in a hotel to build family memories!
